Event Description

History Making Photography at Vermont Center for Photography
The Vermont Center for Photography (VCP) in Brattleboro, VT presents a collection of historic photographs of Windham County, opening May 1 during Brattleboro's Friday Gallery Walk.
Picturing Windham County, Historic Photographs pulls together archived photos from many sources to highlight what has changed and what has remained the same over the past 150 years. From old aerial photos to Chinese weddings, to Brattleboro street scenes from the turn of the 20th century, VCP showcases images that, in many cases, have never been publicly shown. The Brattleboro Historical Society is loaning photographs from two of their biggest collections, the Benjamin Crown photos from early 20th Century and the Brattleboro Reformer collection from the 1950's. Crown used large format glass plates to make extraordinarily beautiful images of Brattleboro and surrounding towns. The Brattleboro Reformer in the 1950's used 4 x 5 black and white sheet film to bring as much detail to the printed photo as possible. Their images include photos of Winter Carnival, the old sawmill on Flat Street, early aerial photos of Brattleboro and many others.
Dan Sprague, a collector of early Brattleboro photos, adds to the exhibit with historic photos of the region’s baseball history. Jonathan Flaccus brings views of the Brattleboro Train Station's construction.
Beverly and Ray Bates loan images from a George McGovern fundraiser in Newfane in 1972 and a John Kenneth Galbraith gathering that includes Dick Cavett and Henry Kissinger.
Collamer Abbott photographs from the early 1950's include prints of the Harris Hill Ski Jump competition.
These early photographs of the Brattleboro area bring the past to the present. Before 1840 history was seen in architecture and art. After the invention of photography, history could be recorded everywhere there was a camera. "Picturing Windham County" reveals our shared history of the Brattleboro region, and allows a rare glimpse into the lives and times of a bygone era.
"Picturing Windham County, Historic Photographs" opens on Gallery Walk on Friday May 1 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. It will close on Sunday, May 31.
The Vermont Center for Photography, a non-profit gallery featuring fine art photography, was founded in 1998. The gallery represents photographers from Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New York, promoting a regional community of photographers. The Gallery is located at 49 Flat Street next to the parking garage in downtown Brattleboro. Gallery hours are Friday, 2 to 7 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.; or by appointment. For directions or information, please call 802-251-6051 or visit the website at www.vcphoto.org.

Christmas-box: OED Word of the Day

Today's word from the OED has the following earliest quotation: 1611 COTGR. Tirelire, a Christmas box; a box having a cleft on the lid, or in the side, for money to enter it; used in France by begging Fryers, and here by Butlers, and Prentices, etc.
