Vermont Center for Photography Celebrates World Wide Pinhole Day on April 26
The Vermont Center for Photography joins the international celebration of pinhole photography with a two day workshop on Saturday, April 25 and Sunday, April 26.
A pinhole camera is any type of light tight box or film camera with a small pinhole in place of the lens. Knowledge of the pinhole's ability to focus an image has been know for thousands of years. It has unique and variable characteristics that vary with pinhole size and size and shape of the box.
During the Saturday workshop, participants will discover what a pinhole camera is, look at examples of pinhole photographs, and construct a pinhole camera.
Materials will be provided but participants are encouraged to bring some kind of box that could be tuned into a pinhole camera. The fee for this workshop is
a suggested donation of $20.
Sunday April 26 is World Wide Pinhole Day (WWPD) when people around the world will take pictures with their pinhole cameras. Photographs taken that day can be uploaded to the
official web site of World Wide Pinhole Day, www.pinholeday.org. The workshop instructors will assist participants with using the cameras made on Saturday and
process the film in the Vermont Center of Photography's darkroom. Participation is free on Sunday except for a small fee for processing film. Everyone, whether in the Saturday workshop or not, is encouraged to bring their own pinhole camera and join this pinhole image making event on Sunday. Participants will be able to see what others are capturing with their pinhole cameras.
The instructors are Sam Pettengill and Al Karevy. Sam is a photography instructor and photographer from Greenfield Massachusetts. He usually photographs with large format cameras and antique lenses. Al is a commercial photographer in Keene, New Hampshire. He teaches part time at Franklin Pierce University and has been taking pinhole
photographs for many years.
The workshop on both days runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and meets at the Vermont Center for Photography at 49 Flat Street, next to the parking garage stairway in downtown Brattleboro, Vermont.
Participants in the Saturday camera making workshop must sign up at the Vermont Center for Photography by Sunday April 19 or via email at vcphoto@sover.net.
The Vermont Center for Photography, a non-profit gallery featuring fine art photography, was founded in 1998. The gallery represents photographers from Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and New York, promoting a regional community of photographers.
